Tuesday Travels: Carnival Of Venice

Posted by Kero at Tuesday, October 11, 2011
It's OctoberFest in Tuesday Travels! Each week, we are to share the international festivals we dream to attend.

For my first entry, I will share the one thing that will make me want to revisit Venice, Italy - the annual Carnival of Venice.

It is more popularly known as Venetian Carnival Masks and it starts 40 days before easter and ends on the day before Ash Wednesday.

Carnival started as a time for celebration and expression throughout the classes, as wearing masks hid any form of identity between social classes. During the 1970s,, the Italian government decided to bring back the history and culture of Venice, and sought to use the traditional Carnival as the centerpiece of their efforts. Today, approximately 30,000 visitors come to Venice each day for Carnivals. One of the most important events is the contest for the best mask, placed at the last weekend of the Carnival. A jury of international costume and fashion designers votes for "La Maschera piu bella".

The Venice Carnival is the most internationally known festival celebrated in Venice, Italy, as well as being one of the oldest. I really I wish I could it in the future.
